Shackled City, Chapter 2: Drakthars Way – Oct. 30th

After a good night’s rest all of us exited the rope trick spell that DaVid had cast earlier. Most of the party had spells to memorize. Because I don’t cast spells, I stood watch down the hallway.

During that hour, my mind started to go foggy and I was really confused.

We all came up with a strategy to go back to the throne room and try to kill that undead animated chair from before. Tom, Cree, Hawk, Luke, and Xiloscient all dashed into the throne room. As they left the hallway it got dark because Hawk was the only one with a light.

As this was happening, I suddenly had a compulsion that I should try to kill all of my party members as efficiently as possible. They were now my enemies and I was a follower of Drakthar and his minions.

I would have attacked DaVid since he was next to me, but I am horrible at fighting in the dark so I headed down the hallway towards the light and where I can ambush my former companions. As I headed down the hallway I saw Xiloscient being attacked by a Spirit-Wolf Goblin and a Warg. Luke was nearby. Tom and Cree were attacking an animated chair in the throne room and there were two half-elven-looking figured laying on the ground in the throne room too. I didn’t see Hawk.

The Spirit-Wolf Goblin and Warg swung at Xiloscient who tried to run away past me. I took a shot at her (but missed) as she went by. I heard her shout down the hall to DaVid I just tried to attack her. I may have to go deal with them first.

One of the dead-looking half-elves somehow rose up into the air and went down the ladder on the other side of the throne room. Tom and Cree were attacking the animated chair. Luke ran up to where I was and attacked the Warg. The Warg retaliated and tripped Luke. I took this opportunity to attack Luke since he was right in front of me and hit him really hard. He stopped moving. Tom and Cree killed the animated chair.

At this time Cree came up to where Luke was and I tried to attack Cree but missed. I don’t think that Cree saw me. Tom came running past me and I took a swing at him as he went by. This startled him and he whirled around to face me. He told me to stop and hit me in a way that hurt differently than normal attacks.

Now Cree was on the other side of me and both Cree and Tom began to try to hit me. I continued to attack Tom and landed a solid hit. He told me to stop attacking or he would kill me. I was compelled to try to kill them and Tom was an immediate threat. I tried to hit Tom again but missed.

By this time, the warg was dead and the Spirit-Wolf Goblin was further away. My master, Drakthar, appeared in his dire-wolf form somewhere in the throne room and attacked Cree. Tom hurt me pretty bad just a moment ago so Iattempted to tumble away to get a better position and possibly aid master Drakthar against my foes. I wasn’t able to tumble away.

Drakthar then polymorphed into his normal self and continued to attack Cree. He hit Cree really hard. Tom looked as if he remembered something and shouted that I’ve beenpossessed by Drakthar. He then took a big swing at me and everything went dark.

Shackled City, Chapter 2: Drakthar’s Way – Oct. 16th

Xiloscient, DaVid, Luke, and I all made it out of the magical darkness and proceeded to retreat away from the darkness and the tentacled dark mentals which resided inside. Luke was busily trying to open a locked door at the other end of the cavern. Fortunatley he got it open and we all spilled into the next room. We recognized this room from earlier. It also appeared that the darkmentals were not following us.

Luke wanted to run off back to the bath house to get some reinforcements. Before he left he handed me a silver magical dagger and Hawk’s silverkukri. DaVid insisted that we go as quickly as possible back to where we last saw Hawk and Tom before we got split up.

The three of us ran the cavern passageway back the way we came. As we reached the same spot where we were before, we were ambushed by twowargs and two S.W. goblins. This did not look good for us and I thought that we were outmatched. They closed in on us, attacking. The goblins andwargs managed to flank both DaVdi and I. One of the wargs tripped Xiloscient.

Once Xiloscient was down, they all surrounded me and attacked. DaVid cast a spell which summed a magical staff, but I was overwhelmedbby my attackers. As one of the goblins stabbed me, I succumbed to my wounds and everything went black.

I woke up to see that Luke, Hawk, Tom, and Cree were all in the cavern with us. There were two warg corpses and one goblin corpse. DaVid, Hawk, and Tom were healing me with their wands. I had been inches from my life.

It was amazing to see that Luke, Hawk, and Tom were all back with us. I didn’t know what happened. Things were happening so fast that no one really had time to explained what happened. From seeing the corpses I surmised that they arrived and helped dispatch the goblins andwargs. There was a sense of urgency from Tom that we need to go somewhere.

Luke ran off back to the bath house and Hawk decided to remain here in a hidden corner to ambush anything that may come upon us. DaVid, Xiloscient, Cree, and I followed Tom down a passageway and we all healed up along the way byusing our very handy healing wands.

We arrived in a chamber and Tom explained to us that there was a throne room nearby with hundreds of rats and a living throne. Tom cast some sort of spell on himself and me which is supposed to make us invisible to the rats. Heexplained that this will allow us to move past the rats unimpeded so that we can attack the living throne thing. DaVid, Xiloscient, and Cree will take care of the rats. As we all prepared for this strategy I gave my alchemist fire to DaVid to use on the rats.

The plan didn’t execute as well as I thought it would. The rats drove Xiloscient and DaVid back into the waiting room as Tom and I rushed into the throne room. Tom can see in the dark but I cannot. I had been relaying on DaVids magical light source to light the way. So when DaVid was driven back I couldn’t see a thing and was unable to help Tom. He tried to hand me something but it was too dark to see.

So I used my flaming fist ability to shed some light on the situation and take the object that Tom was trying to hand me. It was asunrod. At the same time I also attacked the living throne thing.

As I was about to light the sunrod, DaVid, Cree, and Xiloscient came into room. With DaVid came light. He thrust out his holy symbol and tried to turn away the undead throne. It seemed to work! The throne turned around and ran off, going down into a pit across the room.

We were about to chase it when we decided that we should rest up instead. Hawk and Luke returned and DaVid cast his fancy ‘Rope Trick’ spell which will allow us some much-needed rest.

Shackled City, Chapter 2: Drakthar’s Way – Oct. 9th

Tom, Hawk, Xiloscient, DaVid, and I all continued down the hallway into the caverns, taking right-hand turns. As we descended down the cavern (going in a downward slope) we were ambushed by two goblins that we quickly dispatched.

As we were collecting their ears and looting money from their bodies, Luke showed up. Panting from all of the running, he told us about how we might be able to kill Dakthar. We need to find & destroy his coffin or kill him while he is in his coffin. Magic and Silver weapons will harm him along with holy water and wooden stakes. Luke also revealed to us that he has a scroll of magic weapon, a scroll of restoration, and some silver stuff to make a weapon silver for a while.

We continued to proceed down the cavernous corridor when we were ambushed one more time by two goblins from a ledge firing crossbows at us. We killed them (thanks to Hawk, DaVid, and Xiloscient using ranged attacks) and collected their ears & money after they fell to the ground below.

Next, we approached a chamber that had a ledge on the far end. Hawk didn’t want to be ambushed again so he tried to sneak along the wall to the ledge to see if any goblins were waiting in ambush. While he was sneaking along the wall, six goblins ran up and attacked Hawk and the rest of us. We sprang into action and retaliated.

More goblins showed up including an adept caster which attempted to hit us with a scorching ray bit it missed. The adept then ran off down the hallway just as awarg and S.W. goblin showed up. The warg tripped DaVid as Tom and I took down the S.W. goblin. We also eventually killed the rest of the goblins but not before one of the crossbow-wielding goblins on the ledge ran off. Tomshapeshifted into a panther and climbed up onto the ledge and Hawk & Cree followed suit. Hawk, Tom, and Cree chased after them. Hawk was able to use his deadly bow to kill that goblin.

As this was happening, a lone skinny dead-smelling bugbear ran up to me and hit me really hard with his morning star. It hurt badly and I felt that another hit like that would take me out so I tumbled away towards DaVid calling out for some healing from him.

bugbear
(the undead-looking bugbear)

We all ganged up on him and it quickly became apparent that this was no ordinary bugbear. Luke scored what he considers to be a perfect hit and it didn’t do any visible damage to the bugbear. Perhaps this is Drakthar? The rest of my companions seemed to think so because a couple began to pour holy water over him. I tried to use my flaming fists ability but missed, so I poured my holy water over him as well. The holy waterdefinitely seemed to hurt him. Hawk also threw a tanglefoot bag at him. Others were casting spells to make their weapons magical and I think I saw someone using that silvery salve to make their weapon silver.

He was concentrating his attacks on Luke and wasn’t having much luck. I tried to hit him one more time with my fiery fist and landed a hit! I guess it hurt him because he turned into a gaseous cloud just like last time. After turning gaseous, he began to ‘run off’. We chased after him. Tom, for some reason, ran off in the opposite direction. After some hesitation Hawk ran off after Tom.

The rest of us chased after Drakthar down the caverns back the way we came. While chasing the gaseous form, I attempted to hit one more time with my fiery fists but it didn’t seem to do anything. Drakthar continued to lead us down the cavern back the way we came. We didn’t hear or see anything from Tom or Hawk – I have no idea what they are doing.

As Drakthar led us to a rough-floor cavernous room it became more difficult to walk. Luke ran ahead to try to find any secret doors when suddenly everything went black. I wasn’t knocked out again, mind you, but some sort of magical? darkness descended upon us. At about the same time, something from above in front of me attacked and hit me. Not being able to see it or do anything about it, I tumbled away in reverse and ended up against a wall in a lighted area. There was an inky black curtain of darkness in front of me. I called out to my companions that it was light there I am.

Xiloscient, DaVid, and Luke ran of the darkness just as some tentacled thing attacked me from out of the dark area. I backed off just as darkness descended on us again. Knowing what happened last time I didn’t waste any time and tumbled, in reverse for about twenty feet but still remained in the dark. I heard the sounds of what I think were my companions running past me too – I think that they were trying to find their way out of the dark area too, but never heard anything from anyone indicating that they found light or not.

Shackled City, Chapter 2: Drakthar’s Way – Oct. 2nd

Drakthar, who was in a gaseous form, began to drive away from us. Tom was very excited about this and ran after the gas, swinging at it and shouting for the rest of us to try to kill it. Luke said, ‘I’ve got nothing’ and I felt the same way. I didn’t feel that I could use my ki training to strike with flaming fists as I was tired and needed to rest, so I couldn’t help either. I already knew that my fists didn’t seem to hurt him. Only Tom’s magical staff and magic seemed to do anything.

DaVid ran up to it and cast a spell which caused the gas to light up as if it were engulfed in lightning. Hawk showed up and DaVid quickly filled him in on what was going on. As this was happening, the gas continued to move away down the hall and Tom wanted to pursue. Hawk called out for us all to regroup and let him go.

We regrouped and decided that we needed to rest and seek advice on how to deal with Drakthar. Luke ran off to go consult with his associates in town. DaVid and Tom left to go to the barracks to turn in the goblin ears as well as take a goblin prisoner. They were also going to go see Jenya in the church of St. Cuthbert to seek guidance on how to deal with Drakthar.

Xiloscient, Hawk, and I rested in the bath house. Hawk took first watch while Xiloscient and I slept. I was woken up from my sleep to see DaVid and Ruphus (from the church) looking me over. Ruphus looked concerned about my bite mark from Drakthar and said that I need to go with him right away to see Janya about this bite. He said that they will need to cast a powerful spell to get it healed. DaVid and Hawk gave me some money to pay for the casting and I went off with Ruphus.

Rufus led me through the city to the church of St. Cuthbert and I was met by Jenya who cast the special restoration spell on me. It cost 252 gold to pay for, but I felt so much better afterwards. I made my way back to the bath house and got some more sleep along with everyone else.

When I woke up after some good sleep, I felt a lot better. Reflecting on all of the battles since I joined with the Union of Justice made me think about how I can improve how I fight and work together with them. I now feel more prepared to face the challenges. DaVid handed out flasks of holy water for us all to use later. He explained the healing spells and holy water are effective weapons against vampires which we think Drathar is. So when the time is right I’ll use my flask of holy water on Drakther if we face him again.

Everyone else was waking up and some were commenting that they felt like they were more prepared to face challenges as well. DaVid cast a couple of spells and then we headed back down into the dungeon. Hawk led, followed by Tom, Cree, DaVid, and then me. Luke was still not back from meeting with his associates and Xiloscient continued to watch Orek and manage the bath house since it was the next day.

Back down in the main long hallway we began to head east and some goblins ambushed us and attacked. It was a lengthy battle with over a dozen goblins. There were also some more skilled-looking goblins. As we battled and pushed them back, a goblin adept (some sort of spellcaster) appeared around a corner and attempted to shoot me with something flaming but it missed. As I was about to close on him and attack, he ran off. DaVid ended up in the back of the line and somegobins snuck up and hurt him pretty badly with their crossbows and sneak attacks.

A short while later a second goblin adept appeared and tried to harm us with some spells but thankfully they had no effect. I ran up to him and stunned him with my fists while Hawk finished him off with his deadly arrows.

Then a special dual-wielding goblin and his warg appeared. This split out effort since Tom was off into a side room. Between DaVid, Hawk, and I, we dispatched the warg and then the rider as Tom arrived. Finally the battle was over. We counted the dead goblins and ended up killing:

  • 18 goblin skirmishers
  • 3 goblin sneaks
  • 2 goblin adepts
  • 1 goblin warg rider
  • 1 warg

We collected their ears and money and found a few potions. I got a potion of cure light wounds. DaVid remembered that we never searched the brewery when we were down here last because of all the confusion with Drakthar, so we went back to the brewery.

It looked as if it had been cleaned up (we were away to for about ten hours) but we did find a few potions. Hawk got a cat’s grace potion and Tom got a bull’s strength potion. Next we headed down the hallway where we last saw Drakthar.

I sure hope he doesn’t suck my blood again!
